This paper describes a method of developing a structured representation of individuals' categories-in-use. Three examples of people's classifications of NGOs are given from Bangladesh, UK and Nigeria, with a commentary on the differences and similarities. Some problems with the method are identified along with ways of managing them. Other potential uses of the method are described along with some examples. Finally, a favourable comparison is made with PRA's Matrix Ranking and Kelly's Repertory Grid.
