[From Eldis] District Development Indicators: think globally act locally Authors: Centre for Good Governance; Parmar, R. Produced by: Eldis Document Store (2004)
"The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the growing emphasis on results-focused development strategies have in turn increased the demand for timely, reliable, and relevant data. The author of this
paper offers a framework for measuring growth paths within countries or states using core development indicators named District Development Indicators (DDIs). The purpose of the DDIs is to complement more
specific indicators by presenting a balanced set of measures which cover the three pillars of sustainable development, namely social progress, economic growth and environmental protection. Applied to
Andhra Pradesh the total number of DDIs covering 9 sectors was 45 for all the 23 districts in the state. In addition to specific indicators the framework identifies four Strategic Economic Development Objectives
to be fulfilled from the DDIs in order provide useful information to set policies, guide development programmes and monitor outcomes at a regional level."(
