Developing network models of development projects: An introduction > Network Examples > Linked documents
Documents can be linked by common themes, and sometimes researchers are paid to identify these themes and their prevalence.  This was done by Brocklesby and Crawford in their report on "Why Local Drivers of Change Matter: Reviewing "Local" in DFID Drivers of Change Studies" (2005). In Annex 5 of their report a matrix is presented showing what themes were addressed in each of 10 country studies, with cell entries showing how much attention was given to the theme in each study.

The themes and their categorisation into three groups (Agents, Structural Featues, and Institutions), were based on prior work by Oxford Policy Management. In the text analysis of the treatment of the themes by the studies, each of the three groups of themes was discussed in turn, with reference to particular countries where they were studied. However connections between themes (on the basis of co-occurence in the same countries) and between countries (on the basis of co-occurence of themes in those countries) does not seem to have been attended to.

The network diagram below shows these linkages, as evident via a simple two-mode network, based on the data provided in the Annex. In this diagram countries are black squares and themes are circles. Red circles are themes relating to Institutions, blue circle are themes relating to Structural Features, and Green circles are themes relating to Agents. What is interesting in this diagram are the two main clusters of themes. The first at the top of the network diagram, and the second at the bottom. And that these were not region specific (they both include African and Asian countries). One question to ask here is to what extent do these clusters reflect real differences in the "Drivers of Change" in the countries studied, or they artefacts of the way the studies were done. For example, as might arise from two different authorships of the studies
